The following blog entry gives two bookmark scripts that you can use to download HD content from youtube, and SD content when HD isn’t available.
You simply follow the directions, adding the two links to a bookmarks folder, then when you want to download a video you are watching, click the link and it should automatically start downloading – in MP4 format so it’s ready to watch as soon as it’s done, no conversion necessary.
I use this often.

it is the easiest (and also the fastest) way.
